Welcome To My Blog

If you are into talking about the Kansas City Chiefs, this is the place to be. I am Aiken_Drum and I am a Chiefaholic. If you are too, great! Let's discuss this team that we inexplicably love to follow. Don't be afraid to be critical here. Positive or negative, they are all thoughts about the Chiefs. Also, do not tell ANYBODY here that they shouldn't respond in a certain way. You don't like what they said? Just stop commenting. Be the bigger commentor.

2013 Kansas City Chiefs--Let The Fireworks Begin!!

Fireworks Aiken?  Yep, fireworks.  As this off season has gained momentum, something occurs to me in a bigger picture context--namely that Andy Reid and John Dorsey (at the behest of Clark Hunt) are doing everything in their power to create a winning football team.  Now many of you are going to say, what's so special about that?  Isn't that what they are supposed to do?  Big deal Aiken, big deal.

Well, yes, they are supposed to do this very thing.  But I must ask however, how often do Chiefs fans see the kind of exciting, scary, worrisome, petulant, unexplainable, invigorating and down right puzzling point-of-no-return moves that we've seen so far this off season?  I mean really?  What that portends, dear reader, is in my humble opinion, the very essence of fireworks.  The fuse is lit and (intended) explosion but moments (in NFL time) away.  In other words, these guys want to put a winner on the field NOW.  Not in a couple years, not put what ya got out there and see what happens.  These guys (for good or ill) have a plan and idea of what they need to do to win.  They are proceeding with a very decisive, cut through all the BS, bottom line, all the eggs in one basket type plan.  We are observing the coalescing of a fireworks show.

Since last season ended, the daily minutae has included Clark Hunt spending a small fortune on a new HC, GM, OC, DC and more.  In addition, we've resigned a potential HOF WR, extended a top quality P who thought his days were numbered, and tagged a controversial LT who has since thrown an internet fit and closed his twitter account because somebody pissed in his cheerios by asking him if he would consider playing RT instead of LT.  We've also restructured the contract of a certain defensive lineman who many were convinced we would lose to FA and are currently in talks with another to retain his services (as of this writing it is looking very positive for his return).

Suffice it to say that ordinary does not describe this off season to date.

In addition to these uncommon occurances we have cut a legit number 2 WR and a mouthy RT neither of which anyone seems to have a clear cut reason for, and (so far) we have retained the one player (QB to  remain nameless to protect the innocent) that a large majority of the fan base is rabid to see cut loose! Personally, I think that QB is a carbon copy of the one we picked up via trade and will make a perfect back up/camp competition for the new guy.  Both fit in Reid's offense perfectly--but I digress.

Unexplainable?  Random?  Yes to number one and no to number two.  NONE of this my friends is random. Random is on the opposite end of the spectrum from Coach Reid.  First Clark moved decisively to get Reid and since then, Reid has been moving decisively to put the pieces of the puzzle together.  The cool part is that Reid not only picked the pieces, he chose the puzzle in the first place.  Just exactly what did you think that Clark and Andy Reid discussed for 9 hours at a Philadelphia air port anyway?

Fireworks.  That's what they discussed.  Purely hypothetical on my part of course, but I'll bet that Clark is a bit tired of wiping egg off his face.  It would stand to reason given the way the money is being spent to remake this Chiefs team.  The best part is that a lot of the remaking is merely resigning players that are already wearing the uniform.  The reason, to me, that this is the best part is it tells me that these guys care about playing together.

Bowe didn't want to leave, TJax was willing to restructure when it is conceivable that he could have gotten a pretty nice payday on the open market and now we find out that Dorsey may share the sentiment.  These guys see potential or they would have jetted (goes with the picture, don't you think?).

It's been a while since there was reason to believe that somebody was putting forth this kind of effort to make the Chiefs a winner.  The problem, as it always is, is whether or not it will work.  We will find that out in due time.  For now, sitting back with that little bit of enthusiam that this big picture creates is fun.  And for now, it is enough.  We haven't even started FA yet and this off season has been exciting.  That's what I'm talking 'bout.

Hold on Chiefs fans.  Reid has only struck the match.  Next comes lighting the fuse.  It's gonna be a little while yet before the explosions begin, but for the first time in a few years, I'm beginning to think that those explosions are a possibility.  I love feeling that way.  Let's hope that feeling continues...

Whaddaya think Chiefs fans?  Can we make magic again??

Don't tell me that Matt Cassel can't play.  Don't tell me that Bowe ain't worth the money.  Don't tell me that this team can't WIN.

Chiefs Will.  Chiefs Win.  Believe.

  1. Ainen, Matt Cassel can't play. Seriously. Cassel sucks. I hope he's released tomorrow.

Other than that, good post. I'm feeling better about the 2013 season also. I'm not convinced Alex Smith is a [future] Super Bowl QB (or MVP), but what the hell, he's a small proverbial upgrade over the Turnover King.

I see wins in the future. And fireworks!

    1. NP dude. You are wrong about Cassel though. He has demonstrated he can play. Watch the video above--tell me that didn't happen. It's all good. I am ready for the draft to be over and to begin hearing the sound of little feets on the floor at OTAs. :)
